The dish that we make around the Campfire that causes the most conversation due to the unconventional approach to making this family favourite. It was first made by our Camp Maatjie Merlin "Cupcake" van Zyl and since then we have adopted it as our own.

Making a traditional Lasagna on camp wouldn't be that much more difficult, however this ones show stopper nature and ease of assembly makes it a winner. In all honesty the hardest part of this recipe is the White Cheese Sauce. Sometimes we will make the sauce ahead of the camp, the night before we leave etc. and store it in a Zip Lock bag in the Fridge / Freezer, while other times we will make it on Camp, either on the gas burner or the fire if we feeling confident.

Ingredients :

Ragou :

  • 1kg Beef Mince

  • 1x Tin Peeled & Chopped Tomatoes

  • 1 Pkt Tomato Paste

  • 1x Onion

  • 2 Tbsp Sugar

  • 2 Tsp Crushed Garlic

  • Salt & Pepper

Cheesy White Sauce :

  • 2 Cups Flour

  • 250g Butter

  • 1.5L Full Cream Milk

  • 4 Cups Grated Cheese

1 Pkt of Lasagne Sheets

Instructions:

  • In a Flat Bottom Potjie (Size 12) melt your butter, fry the onions until soft and translucent

  • Add in the garlic and fry for minute

  • Add in the Mince and Paste until all the liquid has disappeared and the meat is brown.

  • Add the Tomatoes, Tomato Paste and Sugar, simmer for 30 min, season with Salt and Pepper

  • In a separate pot, melt the butter slowly over medium heat

  • Once melted stir in the flour and cook on a low heat for 2-3 minutes

  • Slowly stir in the milk to avoid any lumps and add in 2 cups of the cheese.

  • Add Lasagna sheets vertically in the ragou mixture, keep an even distance between sheets

  • Top with the White Sauce mixture and top with the last 2 cups of Cheese

  • Close the lid and cook slowly for 1 hour with a few coals on the lid and a few below the pot

This recipe is easily adapted to your own Lasagna recipe for the ragou or sauce etc We normally make a double portion of this recipe as you do need a lot of ragou to fill a number 12 pot and get the lasagna sheets to stand upright and cook in the ragou.

As an interesting alternative, our friends made the same basic idea this weekend, but instead of Lasagna sheets, they used Cannelloni's and it came out just as well, so there is another alternative to this versatile family favourite recipe

Relax and unwind at this tranquil campsite, just a few hours from Cape Town, but just far enough to feel like an escape from the Urban Jungle.

I Love Camping SA Rating : ★★★★★

We spent the Human Rights Day long weekend at Marcuskraal 4x4 and Camp Site which is situated 20km from Citrusdal just off the N7 and is approximately 2 hours' drive from Cape Town. The farm's location makes it ideal for visitors from Cape Town who want to escape the city, but do not want to spend most of their weekend traveling to their destination.

When I visit or see a campsite that is at attached to a 4x4 route, I expect the worst and hope for the best. The campsite is an absolute gem of a site, I cannot believe that it isn’t more popular in the camping community.

The plots are all very well grassed and with adequate shade on each plot. The sites all have electricity and water points on them with mobile braais scattered around the campsite.

The star of the show is the ablutions though, they are simply amazing and by far the best we have ever experienced in the Western Cape. There are 2 ablution blocks, one close to the upper campsites and another near the main entertainment centre.

The pool is nice and big, perfect to cool down in on the hot summers days, luckily the weekend was bearable however this area can get extremely hot over the summer months so bring your own shade along.

The campsite does sell wood as well as well as ice on an honesty box system. There are chalets available for rent as well, some of them even come with a jacuzzi.

There is a function venue on site to cater for large groups or to house a conference etc. The owners can also arrange catering and bar facilities for larger groups if you like.

All in all we have had an amazing camp here at Marcuskraal and I can promise it won’t be the last time we camp here, it’s simply amazing.

The campsite is not Pet Friendly, however the farmer does have is own dogs who frequent the campsite, they currently have 3 ridgebacks and the most adorable corgi who loves nothing more than coming around camp for scratches.

The campsite is well situated for day trips into the Cederberg or the surrounding West Coast towns like Lamberts Bay etc. If you in the mood for adventure, take the road less travel and wonder down some of the many interleading gravel roads in the surrounding area.

Overall cellphone signal on the campsite is a bit erratic, however the campsite does have WIFI across most parts of the campaign.

Every now and then we stumble across a campsite that surprises us by surpassing all expectations, this is one of those...

I Love Camping SA Rating : ★★★★★

This past weekend we visited Kleine Eike Estate just outside of Greyton, around 2hrs from Cape Town.

The campsite lies on the banks of the Riviersonderend and the plots are laid out along the riverside embankment. The campsite only has 16 primary plots however most of them can easily accommodate 2-4 families.

The plots are all well grassed with easy access to electricity and water. Each plot also has its own mobile Braai with a few even having wooden picnic benches on them.

The central ablution block is immaculate and kept very clean and tidy with Hot Water Showers, Flush Toilets and Basins etc. It must be noted that plots 15 & 16 are rather far from the ablutions, so bear this in mind when booking.

There is no pool on the campsite, however there is easy access to the river, which isn’t very deep but quite rocky. Kids will also enjoy the open grassy area behind the ablutions for a game of cricket, soccer or touchies.

The campsite sells wood at R30 and ice at R15 a bag respectively and works on an honesty box system.

The campsite is pet friendly, so bring along your Fur Family who will enjoy the wide open spaces and playing in the river.

While in the area, why not pop into Greyton and visit the famous Market on a Saturday morning for some awesome local artisanal products like fresh breads, coffees, pastries etc

All in all this was an awesome camp and another campsite that we have been really impressed with and we will surely be back again.

Cellular service on the campsite for Vodacom is decent, however very poor on all other networks
